ADDITIONAL HOSPITAL SERVICES

Scripps Mercy has been recognized as a pioneer in patient-focused care and in computer based imagery with patient room computers for charting, ordering, and acquisition of diagnostic results; on-line access to radiologic imaging studies on each patient care floor, and cross-trained caregiver teams. Scripps Mercy has also developed joint partnerships with physician groups in their ongoing effort to continue to provide high quality patient focused care.

The Scripps Mercy clinical services consist of emergency services, trauma center-Level I, chest pain center and urgent care center, medical/surgical wards, telemetry/intermediate care, a combined medical intensive care and coronary care unit, surgical intensive care unit, ambulatory surgery center, interventional cardiology, behavioral health, oncology, orthopedics, palliative care service, pediatrics, perinatal, newborn nursery, respiratory care, audiology, physical therapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, neurodiagnostic services, nuclear medicine, endoscopy/G.I. lab, radiology/ultrasound/MRI/CT scan, bariatric, dialysis, sleep disorders clinic, diabetes center, and the Mercy outpatient clinic that provides primary care services in internal medicine, trauma, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, and medical subspecialties for both children and adults.

Surgical services at Scripps Mercy consist of general, cardiothoracic, orthopedic, neurology, ophthalmology, plastic/reconstructive/micro, otolaryngology, obstetrics/gynecology, urology, oral maxillofacial, cardiovascular surgery, colorectal, podiatry, and lithotripsy.

Ambulatory Surgery Center
Scripps Mercy Hospital has a state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center. Each month, over 700 outpatient surgical procedures are performed in the four-room operating suite, encompassing the spectrum of surgical specialties.

Cardiology
The Mercy Heart Institute was among the first to make use of implantable defibrillators and angioplasty and valvuloplasty procedures that have extended the lives of cardiac patients. The center is equipped for all modern cardiovascular studies and interventions. Here the housestaff become familiar with the techniques of cardiac catheterization, peripheral vascular assessment, electrocardiography, angioplasty and stent placement and echocardiography (both transthoracic and transesophageal). The Scripps Mercy/UCSD open-heart surgical team also works closely with this center. Pacemaker implantations and follow-up studies are performed in the laboratory, and patients with arrhythmias undergo electrophysiologic testing. Three cardiac catheterization rooms, two of which have biplane-imaging equipment, are in constant utilization.

Mercy Clinic
Established in 1961, Mercy Clinic provides quality primary and specialty care for low-income patients. With 33,000 patient visits annually, Mercy Clinic is one of the few clinics of its kind in San Diego County dedicated to caring for the underserved. The Mercy Clinic puts into practice the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy to serve those in need, and our mission is to provide quality medical care to meet community health needs, as well as providing a training venue for the Scripps Mercy Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program, and other affiliated medical education programs in San Diego and Southern California. The ongoing dedication of the Sisters of Mercy, the hospital administration, the Scripps Mercy Hospital Foundation Board and staff, together with generous donor support, will ensure that the Mercy Clinic continues the tradition of caring.

Mercy Clinic provides primary care for adult and children, prenatal and obstetric services, and a venue for post hospitalization follow-up for acute care of inpatients on the medicine, pediatric, trauma, and acute orthopedic services at Scripps Mercy Hospital. In part through participation of the voluntary teaching faculty, a variety of subspecialty clinic are available to patients including cardiology, congestive heart failure clinic, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, HIV, neurology, nephrology, orthopedics, rheumatology, and dental services. In August, 2000, the Mercy Clinic moved into a new state of the art facility built solely through philanthropic support.

Medical Library
One of Scripps Mercy Medical Library’s primary responsibilities is to provide support to the Medical Education Department. The Library maintains a book collection of about 4,000 current texts, 500 videotapes and approximately 300 journal subscriptions. Web access to MEDLINE and other databases is available from any computer throughout the Hospital or Clinic, including four computers in the Medical Library. Databases include MEDLINE (Ovid or PubMed), HealthStar (hospital administration), Cochrane Library, Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews and CINAHL (nursing) via Ovid. The Ovid interface to MEDLINE and other databases is very user-friendly … an online tutorial is available, or library staff will provide group or individualized training sessions on request. Scripps Mercy employees may access Ovid databases from any hospital computer with no user i.d. or password required, or apply in the Library for access from off campus. Consumer health/patient education databases include MEDLINE Plus and Infotrac. Scripps Net, Scripps' intranet, includes links to MD Consult, Micromedex and the Medical Library home page. UpToDate, MS Word, PowerPoint and other applications are also available on the Library computers. The librarians will do computer literature searches for you, or you may do your own searches. Librarians will obtain journal articles and books, which are not in Mercy's library through inter-library loan. There are group study rooms, carrels for quiet study, an AV Room with audio and videotapes, which may be checked out, a video player, photocopiers, and a scanner. Internal Medicine board review materials, including MKSAP and MedStudy, Mayo Internal Medicine Board Review (28 videos) and the Mayo Internal Medicine Board Review (book) are also located in the Library. Residents have Mercy i.d. badge access to the library after hours, weekends and holidays.

Medical Photography
The Department of Medical Education employees a full-time medical photographer who can produce slides from any materials that are camera ready, for resident presentations, meetings, and publications. PowerPoint presentation is also available. Photo-documentation of patients in the hospital or clinic setting for teaching purposes is also available. Residents may obtain copies of their portrait, taken at orientation, for USMLE and licensure applications.

Neurodiagnostic Services
Staff neurologists and neurodiagnostic technologists provide Scripps Mercy’s Neurodiagnostic Services. The neurologists perform EMG and nerve conduction studies. Technologists perform EEGs, evoked potentials and Transcranial Doppler studies; a panel of neurologists performs reading and interpretation of the tests. Department hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday with weekend on-call coverage provided.

Palliative Care Service
The Palliative Care Service at Scripps Mercy Hospital is a multidisciplinary medical teaching service focused on relieving suffering and improving quality of life for patients with serious, life-limiting illness. The focus of palliative care is on complex pain and symptom management, and addressing appropriate goals of care with patients, families and caregivers. Clinical services provided by the Palliative Care Service include pain management, symptoms of serious illness difficult to control (nausea, vomiting, delirium, etc), psychosocial, emotional or spiritual support, addressing and clarifying the goals of care and end-of-life issues with patient and families, advance directives and resuscitation issues, complicated ethical issues in coordination with the Ethics Committee, support of clinical staff challenged by the care of these patients and families. Close coordination with case management, social work, behavioral health, physical/occupational therapy and chaplaincy is provided on all in-patient units. The Palliative Care team is under the direction of Renée I. Smilde, M.D.

Psychiatry
The Scripps Mercy Behavioral Health Center service consists of a modern 50-bed inpatient unit and an outpatient unit under the direction of a full-time psychiatrist. Short-term dynamic psychotherapy is featured. There are no custodial care patients and the service is organized as a therapeutic community unit. Training will focus on enhancement of interview technique, diagnosis, treatment and management strategies, focusing on psychopharmacology intervention in various treatment approaches. Psychiatric consultation is available for patients on all services, and a review of patient care issues with the psychiatric consultation service takes place on a weekly basis. A psychiatry residency is not offered at Scripps Mercy Hospital.

Rehabilitation Services
The Rehabilitation Services Department at Scripps Mercy Hospital includes Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology. A full range of services is provided on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The philosophy of the department is to meet the needs of the patient and the members of the health care team. Resident’s are encouraged to visit the facilities and become familiar with the evaluation and treatment services available. Third year internal medicine residents rotate through this department as part of their geriatrics rotation. The Rehabilitation department teams are available throughout the year for resident education regarding rehabilitation issues.

Respiratory Care
Respiratory Care Services at Scripps Mercy Hospital are available on a 24-hour basis providing inpatient service to patients with both acute and chronic respiratory illness.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit
A 14-bed, monitored, fully equipped Surgical Intensive Care Unit is adjacent to the operating room suite, the recovery room, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit. The patient population consists primarily of trauma and open-heart surgery patients. On occasion, MICU overflow patients are placed in the SICU.
