Scripps Mercy Hospital

HISTORY

Founded in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy, Scripps Mercy Hospital is San Diego’s longest-operating and only Catholic hospital in the county – growing from its beginnings as a clinic to its present facility a 517-bed acute tertiary care hospital, making it the largest private teaching hospital in the San Diego area. Along with their tradition of caring for the underserved population, the Sisters of Mercy have had a long-standing commitment to the Mercy graduate medical education residency training programs that have existed now for over fifty years. The Sisters of Mercy are dedicated to the highest caliber of health care, and vow to serve the poor, the sick and the uneducated. It is their profound belief that education and dedication to service can attain the highest goals of patient care.

As the Sisters of Mercy were preparing to move to the Fifth Avenue location of Scripps Mercy Hospital, Ellen Browning Scripps was realizing a separate dream as she founded Scripps Metabolic Clinic and Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Mercy Hospital joined Scripps in 1995 and the foundress’ missions have evolved over the years into a system of five acute-care hospitals with more than 2,500 affiliated physicians, numerous outpatient clinics, home health care services and associated support services. In addition, Scripps is affiliated with Catholic Healthcare West, a forty-hospital system of acute care facilities in California, Arizona and Nevada.
